Weld nut is to be welded onto another metal workpiece. Weld nut includes various of type, such as Hex, Flange, Square and Round. Purpose of hex weld nut is for heavy duty applications. Various of welding projection is up to application. Main purpose is to attach to the workpiece and creates a threaded hole vertical to base material.
For further application specific, you could add locking feature to create prevailing torque value.
